I love Make Your Own Items and I found this a while back and thought I would share with you.
When my stockpile runs low this is what I use which really stretches are budget.
Make your Own Laundry Products.  (Oh you know this is a science project for my daughter. )
I found this wonderful little Cheat Sheet from One Good thing which you can  Download your Cheat Sheet.

Below is Recipes that I have tried and I do like a lot.
Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap
Front or top load machine - best value
  • 4 cups hot tap water
  • 1 Fels-Naptha soap bar (ivory)
  • 1 cup Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
  • 1/2 cup Borax
  • Grater-$tree has cheap ones, I don't like using my regular grater for this
  • 5 gal bucket-home depot $3.xx
  • saucepan-I got a cheap one at a yard sale for this. (same reason why as grater)

Directions:

Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted. Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda, and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover, and let sit overnight to thicken. Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel).

Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons. Top Load Machine- 5/8 cup per load (approximately.180 loads). Front Load Machines- 1/4 cup per load (approximately 640 loads).
Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent - It must be sodium carbonate! Recipe cost approx. $2 per batch.

Homemade Fabric Softener

Ingredients:

6 - cups Hot Water
3 - cups White Distilled Vinegar
2 - cups Hair Conditioner (any brand)
1 - Empty Gallon Container

Directions:
In large (microwave safe) bowl, mix the vinegar and hair conditioner together (it will look a bit clumpy).
Place the whole bowl in the microwave and heat for a minute or two. This will ensure the ingredients will blend together more easily. Remove from microwave and stir. (I used a whisk).
Add hot water and mix to make sure everything is blended. Pour mixture into a one gallon container and store in laundry room.
Use the same amount you normally use in a rinse cycle (approx 1/2 cup).
Note: Add to fabric dispenser department, downy ball or directly in the second rinse cycle. Before each use give the bottle a good shake to mix it up.
Stain Remover
1 part dawn dishsoap
2 part hydrogen peroxide
I keep mine in a spray bottle
or
Homemade Stain Remover
Supplies Needed:
  • 1 empty spray bottle
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp. washing soda
  • 1 Tbsp. Oxy Clean (I use the store kind)
  • Water to fill almost to the top
Directions:
Mix in bottle. Wait a while before you put the top on because it will expand a lot then before you use it. Shake well first and then spray on your stains.
